When moving to a new area, at some point you’ll need to find a doctor who can take care of you. This is an intimidating process for many people, especially when they’ve gone to the same doctor for many years. However, there are a few things you can do to help you find the right doctor.

Understand Needs

Different people have different medical needs, which means they need a doctor who can address those concerns. While some people see specialists to treat their medical conditions, you may be able to find a Primary Care Physician who has experience in this area. Keep in mind that you may need to see a specialist, regardless of whether there is a PCP with this expertise. However, it can help if the two are both knowledgeable and can work together to form a cohesive treatment plan.

Ask for Referrals

When you get settled in your new area, ask local friends and coworkers if they recommend a particular practice. Be cautious that you’ll need to confirm that your insurance is accepted before going to any referred practice. However, since you know the people you’re asking, it’ll be more likely that you are referred to a good doctor you can trust.

Look by Insurance

If you want to be safe and know for certain that the doctor you go to is covered under your insurance, many insurance companies offer an online search tool. You can usually search by specialty and location, which is helpful as you get accustomed to a new area. Still, you should confirm with the doctor that they currently accept your insurance.

Don’t Settle

Finally, it is important to remember that you don’t have to settle. Finding the right doctor can be a process, and what works for one person doesn’t necessarily work for another. Make sure to note the things you did and didn’t like about a doctor before going to another.

Additionally, if you feel as though you are not being taken seriously, be an advocate for yourself and find a doctor who will hear you out. Do not stay with a doctor simply because it is the easiest choice. Stay with one you can trust.

Finding the right doctor for you can be a long process. However, once you have one, you can rest assured that you are in good hands anytime you fall ill.
